Olde Columbine once was one of the greatest communities you could have ever seen. Every student has come from similar backgrounds which; had lead them to OCHS in the first place. Where, we all have the same goal of graduating and succeeding in life. Therefore we had made the school not just any community but a family in which it has been made easy to reach this goal.

If each and every person had trust, integrity, respect and were responsible you’d always find the best community. Life will always be an adventure traveling from one community to another. Yet, no matter where life shall lead you, just have those couple of things in mind and you could be the start of something great.

 

Creating a successful community consist on several things. One big thing that every community should have is rules and regulations to keep the community up and running. OCHS has a governance meeting once a week, a place where the ones in the community have a right to be heard and have a chance to speak. Having a gathering to talk about what is going on in the community is very important so everyone can get an idea of what is going on around them. Another thing a community should have is to host activities where everyone in the community is expected to put some part into it. That’s important so the community has each other close enough where things can get accomplished successfully. A community will always have people that care enough to volunteer to help the community, and others that just don’t care of what is going on. OCHS also has its “norms” that are expected to be fallowed by everyone. In a community it is great to have some thing similar to the “norms”. Those are certain rules that will jump in to help the community not fall apart.

GOVERNANCE 

Our governance meetings show the perfect democracy in a way that no other democracy can seem to comprehend. We tend to always have everything that a perfect democracy needs. We have the people that don’t really care the ones that are way into it and the people who aren’t happy with what’s going on in the meeting. We also have the leaders of the community so we have people to help keep everyone under control. If we didn’t have leaders to help keep everyone under control there would be udder insanity in every meeting and we would never get anything important done.

In a democracy you do need the people that don’t really care about things because they can have good points about some things. Like what is the point of worrying about this it’s so stupid and crazy. There are things that we worry about that don’t really need to be worried about. The people that aren’t really into it will tell you if it’s really important or not.

In a democracy you also need the people who are way into it because if you didn’t then you would never have anything to talk about and work on. When we do have something to talk about if there isn’t anyone who is way into it then there would be no discussion on what is going on in the community. They can also be the crazy ones who will just get way into a subject and just go crazy about it if it doesn’t go their way.

In a democracy we also have the leaders. If we didn’t have the leaders to run the meetings things will get way out of control and out of hand. We wouldn’t get anything done due to the lack of order. The leaders also help to start a discussion about important items on hand in the community.

All of these things make Olde Columbines governance meetings the perfect democracy. With the ones with a lack of interest, the ones with too much interest and the leaders of the community from which we have created among our selves. When we are all put together we make the perfect democracy and the perfect family in our little school of peace. We are the perfect democracy.

Each Other

Throughout life we all work with others whether we realize it or not. Like at a job you realize that you and coworkers, work together to get things done. Then at school each student kind of works alone at putting something into the school yet in the end it is a team of students and teachers work that has made it functional. Also back at home each and every person does their part and it makes not only a house but a home.

No matter what you shall be doing it fits into something else. It’s like a puzzle, you sit flipping and turning, mixing and matching pieces together. Once you are stuck and all out, you go to someone to see what they got to give and help. Eventually there will be a group of people sitting looking at the big picture saying I helped with that.

 Some of the hardest parts can be working with people you don’t get along with or giving and getting directions. Some like to be leaders and give the directions but have to learn to sit back and take some direction. Others like getting the directions but have to learn to step up to the plate; be a leader and give directions. Also there are always people that don’t get along but to get something done they have to suck it up and work together just to get the project done.

Sometimes a person just wants to give up; build walls and shut out the world. Even when one does that every move they make and lead to someone else doing something. When this happens others will work together to figure out why it has happened and what they can do to tear down the walls. As you can see, even if you are alone your actions lead to others.

All of this is just apart of living and making it through. People have to learn and challenge themselves. Also no one can ever take the easy way out and do the things they like and know they can do. At some point in their life they have to do the complete opposite. All in all, working together with others is all around us and part of life even if we do not recognize it.

           The norms at Olde Columbine High School are apart of every student and every staff member within Olde Columbine. Even though they were made years ago, they still are held up to expectations. Norms are what help our school not only to progress into better learning opportunities but to also strive to want to be apart of the OCHS community. I do believe that this school stands out then any other school that I have ever attended. The Olde Columbine norms help every student in their own way to feel comfortable and to reach their goal of getting a high school diploma. Without worry of being excluded, nor discriminated.

 

           The definition of norms is a standard, model or pattern of a general level or also known as average. For example two cars per family is the norm for most suburban communities. Starting off at Olde Columbine I thought it would be like every other school, but after a couple of days I soon comprehended that this school was nothing alike to all my old schools. At Olde Columbine students actually care about each other and don’t judge you for who you are, how you look or for who you hangout with. The Olde Columbine Community understands that we all come from different backgrounds and just because you’re different whether it be that you’re a punk, a geek, a nerd or one of the popular kids.

 

Some of the norms are to own your actions, accept the consequences. This norm teaches you to be responsible for what you do. Help when ever possible helps students and teachers know and feel comfortable to help some one in need. Embrace inviduality lets everyone feel comfortable to be themselves knowing that they do not have to be fearful of being ridiculed for being different. Practice kindness and consideration if some one you see is having a bad day try to help out or another example is smile and try to converse with everyone around you so that no one feels left out. Another norm is to teach to the norms tactfully and to confront wrongdoers this norm helps every one be informed of how Olde Columbine and its students like to be treated and how we as a school like things to go, also not to just point fingers at other peers if there is a problem handle the problem in a mature way were everyone will feel comfortable and safe. The last norm at Olde Columbine is to strive for knowledge, don’t be afraid to learn and gain new experiences.

          

           The Olde Columbine norms are very useful, they teach not just students but visitors and teachers many lessons that can be used in everyday life. The norms are very beneficial for not only the students but also for the teachers and the school in general. Our norms are what make us as a community stand out against disrespect and discrimination. The norms are what keep our school going helping students and teachers get along and learn not just from teachers but from other fellow students. Olde Columbine understands that we all come from different backgrounds and that we all have different history but instead of looking down at us for being different we are welcomed with warm smiles.

Yet it may be one of the hardest norms to follow because most people will be to afraid to come out and own your actions so how would they be able to accept the consequences. Its best to own your actions that way we could help the person fix what ever went wrong. To help people whenever they may need help will help you feel better about yourself while also befriending someone new which will also help anyone feel good about themselves along with the person that you helped feel good about being able to make a new friend just by the who ever helped them helping them out. To embrace others individuality is to embrace the world. No matter where you go or what school you go to everyone is different weather they like to admit it or not. To be different is a wonderful thing in fact its one of the best things in the world.   Practice kindness and consideration is a great thing to do. Sometimes all someone needs is for a stranger to give them a smile. Kindness and consideration also makes someone feel good about themselves and others. Once people started to show me some kindness and consideration I started to grow into the wonderful person that I am now. I now show everyone I meet the same kindness and consideration that I have received here at Olde columbine. I did not get even the slightest bit of kindness at my middle school. We should all teach the norms to everyone even from people out side of Ochs. If everyone knew the norms the world would be a happier place. Tactfully confront wrong doers will better help the people learn to be a better person. People will better decided to actually stop doing what is wrong because they see that they don’t need to cry out for attention. Strive for knowledge so that you can make the best of yourself at all times.

     I try to always follow all the norms because they have brought me so much happiness and I think the norms should be like the Ten Commandments so that everyone follows them. So many people will be a lot happier if they were like the Ten Commandments. The norms are good rules to follow. I think I will teach them to all my friends and family then they can follow the norms as well. I see it here at Olde columbine all the time peoples life changing so much just because of a few norms.

Leadowers - I'm spending some time this summer thinking about the leadership class curriculum and I need your help.  I'd like to encourage you to change your settings on your posts in this community - please post publicly.  I certainly can't force you, but you're all very bright writers and I plan link this community to my blog.  That's where I'm developing my thinking about the class. I encourage you to engage my thoughts in the blog and help me develop the class. 

If you're reading this, call everyone you know who's been in leadership or thinks they might want to take it next year.  Spread the word. 

I'm talking with some teachers right now about how to use technology in the classroom and don't think there's anyone in the world with better ideas about that than y'all.  I'd like to beef up Creative Writing with technology.  Here're my goals:

- Share what we're doing with the cyber community.  Seems like workshop is pretty useful but we're kind of selfish about it.  How can we share with teachers, students, parents, principals, professors...

- Document what's happening. Surely this hasn't happened to anyone reading this but at some point, some student has actually misplaced his or her readers responses and had some difficulty with the end-of-quarter reflection.  I know that suprises you, but it's happened:)  This'd help y'all see how you grow as readers and as writers.

- Provide more opportunity to write and get feedback about your writing.  One of the biggest complaints about this class is that y'all don't get to do more than one workshop.  Some of you remember when I tried to move the workshop into the moodle - it was a bit of a disaster.  Do you think there is an online format that would allow you to do a traditional readers response?  

So - if you're paying attention, please give me some feedback.  What ideas do you have that can help me meet these goals?

Dreams have various meanings but this dream was beyond explainable. I began walking down the narrow stairs; a foggy mist of light led my eyes towards a big metal door at the bottom of the well. I had no idea how I had gotten there, no idea for the purpose. I was confused and scared yet my mind overflowing with curiosity. Hands trembling, I grasped firmly to the rail that was wet an tarnished as if it was worn. By the looks I could tell this abandoned, unknown place had history. It was old and reminded me of a prison.

Every step I took creaked the wooden planks under me. Trying hard to keep my knees from giving in, I kept walking one foot in front of the other. After what had seemed like forever I finally reached the end of the staircase. I looked up and noticed a chain of pipes leading a maze down the perimeter of the wall, sounding as if water were being drained. Once my eyes followed the bronze tubes down they hit the floor. The hard concrete ground was cold and bare. A small flashing light beamed from underneath the door. I observed the engraving and bolts on the outside entrance which would lead to another unfamiliar place. The doorknob was aged and flipped up to unlock. I took and deep breath and pushed the passage open.

The temperature of the air had changed dramatically. Every inhale; a cold breeze, which became painful as it filled my lungs. I looked up to the center of the barren room. My heart dropped, as did I. My cousin was strapped with leather and silver buckles around his ankles and wrists onto a wooden chair. He sat with no words coming through his dry pale lips. Tubes were leading in and out of his body supplying oxygen. Once he looked towards me with his eye lids struggling to raise, I could see he was silently begging for help. I crawled up to release him, but as soon as I got close I was blocked. As if some force was not allowing me to touch him. I began screaming for help as tears rolled constantly down my face. I felt the room begin to shake and noticed a large black shadow in the corner of the room. That's when my body decided to wake from this mesmerizing night. 

Like the universe, the community we create around us is ever expanding and shrinking. New people are accepted into it as the old respectfully bow out, and those who remain are left surrounded sometimes by a new sea of faces. At OCHS the community is the school. It is the people we teach and the lives we change. It is something that can last forever.

The way our minds work and how each individual experiences and process the daily events in Olde Columbine is unique and different. But the community I see is not only in the students who attend the school and the teachers who teach here, but the community is also in the walls that surround us and the air we breathe. There are so many memories in the school that not every student will be a party to, but if someone were to take the time to listen, the building will always have a story to tell. After all, as the students and teachers come and leave, and the faces and personalities change the school will still be here. It will be keeping our secrets and remembering the paths we lead through our time here.

To me community is not just a material thing like the students and the staff and the families who have tread our halls, but it is the memories we made in the school that we will carry with us throughout our lives. I do not believe that our community is the people here and now and the bonds we make and break. I believe it is much deeper, it is a feeling we will always have. As long as the feeling of trust and hope and passion and love stays with us, our community will last however long we choose to remember it. 

the spear of the pain that you caused by being yourself. i can’t stand you being around me. no more please no more. why do you always have to torture me with your presence? i thought i would always be yours. to hold in your arms when i was down. to help me pick myself up if i fell. i guess i was wrong to think that you would always be there. now you tell everyone else that i am horrible. all that ever wanted was for you to be happy and get what you wanted. if i were to say that your happiness was what made me happy would that change anything? i feel sorry that you have lost me as a friend and even more so for the fact that i do not get to see you leave for your dream. yes i remember the one thing you wanted to do. the fact that you wanted to join with the navy and fight for your nation. when i think about life i hope you die while your out there. yet i also hope that you are happy and live life to its fullest. one thing that i hope you remember is how great you are. you even made me laugh on my worst and made my good days shine. how i hope you remember me the way i remember you. goodbye i say one last time as i let you go and drift off into nothingness because without you i found that i do not exist.

Sometimes life is rough. Usually hope is the friend you can count on to get you through things; especially it feels like everyone else has jumped ship. But lately hope has been the enemy. After loss and pain and being left behind by people I care about the pain of hope is greater a burden than accepting the loss.

 I have changed my ways, though some things have stayed the same. Now that I have realized my faults, and the hurt I have caused the people I care about most, I cannot make amends because so few people can see the change. I will not be given another chance. So I have given up hoping for forgiveness and the day when everyone realizes we are all just teenagers and the things we do now are not permanent. I have moved on. Tomorrow is a new day (how cliché is that?) and I am not going to live in the past. Life is pushing, on whether or not I agree that it should. So I might as well pick myself up and follow.

Hope hurts, but its not permanent. Life will get better.
